COUTADA 9 - MOZAMBIQUE

Towards the end of 2019 we went into Coutada 9 in Mozambique to collar one of the areas most dominant female lions that was helped introduced to the concession by Rio Save Safari’s a few years ago. Coutada 9 has 35 lions of which the most recent is 4 males and 6 females, arriving from Phinda Game Reserve in South Africa. This area of Africa is one of the area’s that is completely unfenced from boarder-to-ocean, leaving the animals vulnerable, especially to poachers. It was for this reason that PAL decided along the Green Teen Team foundation to fund the lion collaring, which provides weekly data to the areas biologists and conservationists to insure that the prides are in the ‘safer’ zones of the region. James Murphy - our COO, along with the help of the team at Rio Save Safari’s and a wildlife veterinarian, tracked and successfully collared a female (as seen in the picture) which now stands a much greater chance of survival in the on going battle against poachers and encroaching surrounding villagers.

Whilst focusing on the collaring process, the team also took time out to talk to head conservationist and biologist Holly Rosier who highlighted that the area could really flourish with the right donations and support of foundations such as PAL. The end goal would to have enough donations to have air support in the form of a helicopter, which can reduce animal deaths by the thousands per year. We will continue to aid this area as they strive to build in more sustainable and safer eco-system for their prides.

We will continue to grow and develop our relationship with Coutada 9 to ensure that our lions are kept as safe as possible.
